Treasure Hunts

What fun these can be!  And very easy to create at home for your kids.  It can be as simple as filling a bucket with sand and bury little objects for your kids to dig for.  Or you can write clues to lead your kids to places where they find another clue and eventually get to a prize.  Or you can give a list of items to locate whether inside or outside.  The sky's the limit.

My mother organized a neighborhood treasure hunt for the kids on the block when I was probably 6 or 7 years old.  We were given a piece of paper with a clue on it to start off.  We then had to figure out where the next paper clue was.  Eventually we got to the prize - I believe it was sidewalk chalk, but not sure.  We dug in the landscaping stones, looked behind bushes, in trees, under pots and plenty of other places.  I just remember how fun it was running around with the other kids looking for these clues.

My teenage son and his friends organized a treasure hunt that gave clues that they had to go to a certain location downtown and write down something they were supposed to be looking for and when they were all done, everything together was the big reveal.

Whatever age, a Treasure Hunt can be fun, challenging and a great way to spend some time with your friends.
